Hello Again!

This blog might I add is like the common man, it takes all the atrocities thrown at it and yet carries on. I can't apologize enough for not blogging more, too lazy, too busy is not an excuse. One can never be too busy is what someone said to me recently, or I read somewhere can't remember. Yes, its age which is catching up as well, its been that long I've blogged!

So, December already!

This year has been something! 13 has always been my lucky number and I'll always hold anything relating to this number dear to me. 2013 has been no exception. The year I bought my first car (first of many I hope!), long awaited and drooled over DSLR, a new lappy, among other inconsequential tangible knick knacks! iPod touch crashed a few days back trying to update to a new version, almost as sad as losing a dear friend.

Works' been good, hectic and chaotic, just the way I like it! Keeps me occupied and leaves not a moment to ponder. Completed an year at the current job place being a Product Manager/Consultant, screaming and shouting at people trying to get work done, successfully mostly!

No major health scares, cold/fever, back aches and neck pains mostly!  Survived another year without getting glasses, so that's good as well! Been sober this year, well apart from a few occasional binges! Put on a little weight, I always say little as I always think I can claw back!

Short trip to Mumbai and Goa was good, brother now based there, so look forward to going there more often. I love Mumbai, nostalgia always gets the better of me.

I think I can by all means call this a good year, hoping the next year brings me more closer to what I want to be, what I feel I deserve. Beating the plus'es of this year is going to be hard to top though!

Stirling retreat

A well deserved outing out of Glasgow, after three and a half months here saw me and the mates going to Stirling, a city, well, a very small city an hours drive from here. Not that we could have chosen a better day for the trip, the mercury plummetted to a bone chilling -5C! (Pic:In an animated discussion with his royal highness while the jester looks on) The main attraction of Stirling, the Stirling Castle, the place of cornation of the legandary Queen of Scotts, and witness to the wars faught by the Scottish heros William Wallace and Robert the Bruce against their English counterparts. The scenic beauty of the palace took us a while to absorb, so did the entry fee to the castle (still not recovered from it)! Well, it brings me back to our roots, as Indians. Not that we didn't build castles and forts similar to this one if not better, my point focusses on our stingy attitude. Having paid the amount for the castle entry, we cribbed on the fact whether we should pay an addit...

DÉJÀ VU –VEDA TU!

Hey, I’ve been here before! How many times have you said that to yourself? I am sure it’s been more than a handful number of times. The very of concept of the Déjà vu is almost like challenging god at his own game. The very thought of giving god a run for his money sounds like fun right! Well not exactly. I’m no expert at this déjà vu business but I am sure that science has some suitable explanation for this phenomenon. Why only humans? I suppose animals must be having such feelings too! Just imagine, a lion prowling on a wilder beast, just as it is about to pounce on the helpless creature, it suddenly strikes the lion like lightning. Saying I’ve seen this man, err lion (?), it stops to recollect and in the split of the second, the wilder beast gets just enough time to scamper to safety, long enough to sit one day and share this story with its siblings! I’ve heard theories related to this occurrence stating the delay between the time both eyes take in transmitting ...

Understanding the job

Working with a product company, one of the bigger dilemmas facing the Product team is what to build based on the backlog of product items. Listening to a Harvard lecture podcast online recently, I came across a concept which helped me clear this dilemma. It simply asks a question- what is the job that your product is hired to perform? Ideas for the product you are building can come through various routes. We're going to lose this customer if we don't incorporate this now, this is something the CEO really wants to see in the product, it's been sitting in the backlog forever etc. But a very good way to go about prioritizing what goes into the product is to find the answer to the question- what is the job that your product is hired to perform? Imagine the product to be an employee who is hired for a particular profile. Now there are certain roles and responsibilities or KPI's which will define whether this employee is fit for the post. The same logic will apply to the p...
